This year’s monsoon has been good so far to the Kaveri Basin area. Water Falls, rivers, dams and other water bodies are overflowing with joy. Tourists are thronging towards famous water places in order to enjoy monsoon. Apart from some famous water places like KRS, KRS backwaters, Balmuri, Yedamuri, Chunchanakatte falls etc., there are other less known but beautiful water places around Mysore. Here is a list of three such offbeat and go-to water places which are just a short drive away from the city.
Bangara Doddi Naale
Bangara Doddi Naale is a canal with historic importance. It is said to have been built over 350 years ago. This canal is believed to be the first aqueduct ever built in Asia and the first check dam constructed by a Kannada ruler across the River Cauvery. History says that it was built during the tenure of Kantheerava Narasaraja Wodeyar, erstwhile King of Mysore. It is situated behind Chandravana Ashrama at Sriranagapatna. This canal is the lifeblood for the farmers who are cultivating different crops in the vicinity of Srirangapatna. It has the capacity to hold 60 cusecs of water and provides water for over 850 acres of land. A fascinating fact about this canal is that it seldom empties itself despite drought conditions and poor rainfall. This is the favourite weekend vacation spot for localities. However, it is still unexplored by many tourists who come from different cities and states.

Hathwalu Katte (Hullahalli Dam)
Located at Rampura Village, Nanjangud Taluk, Hullahalli Dam / Hathwalu Katte is a beautiful one-day vacation spot. We can reach this place by travelling through Hullahalli Village. It was established in 1889. It has a magnificent history of 133 years. This dam receives water from Beechanahalli (Kabini). It provides water to the farmers who are cultivating around this area. There are two gates to this channel and there are 2 dedicated people to open the gates whenever necessary. This is a wonderful place which is just a short drive away from the city with fewer crowds. It awaits tourists with a stunning view of sunset.

Karekura
Karekura is a small but an amazing water place which is about 15km from Mysuru and 10 km from Srirangapatna. River Kaveri flows graciously, providing an astonishing view to the tourists who visits this place. To look at the transparent, pristine water which flows through hard rocks is a visual treat. It is said that the name ‘Karekura’ is the modernised version of the name ‘Kaveripura’. A bunch of people come here during weekends and holidays to experience a soothing aura amidst cool breeze and clear water. Visiting this place during monsoon is still more awesome. This little place is an ideal for small picnics.
