After a gap of several years, the Besige (Summer) Mela is back at the Karnataka Exhibition Authority (KEA) grounds at Doddakere Maidana in Mysuru. Besige Mela, set-up during every summer, was a huge hit with the crowd. But due to various reasons, it had not been held since 2012. It is now back after 10 long years. The Mela was inaugurated on 4th May.
Besige Mela comprises of commercial stalls, food court and amusement park. 75 commercial stalls with traders from different parts of the country sell items such as bed sheets, curtains, handloom and handicraft items.
The special attraction of Besige Mela is an art studio called ‘Madagascar’ with 3D models of a variety of animals. The models of animals featured in this art studio are programmed electronically to make certain movements. Visitors can take selfies posing in front of them.
The art studio features a number of models including life-size and larger than life-size models of lions, zebras, giraffes, monkeys, penguins etc. The models have been prepared by artists, who set up sets for shooting of films. Besige Mela is open from 3.30 pm to 9.30 pm on all days of the week.
Amidst the chaos at the heart of the city, there is a gem called ‘Indira Gandhi Rashtriya Manav Sangrahalaya’ (IGRMS) which often goes unnoticed. The South Regional Centre of IGRMS is housed in the heritage building ‘Wellington Lodge’ in the heart of Mysore (Near KSRTC Bus Stand, Irwin Road). The headquarters of IGRMS is in Bhopal.
IGRMS started functioning in 2001. This museum is an important attraction to tourists who visit Mysore. It is of historical importance as well. The main objective of this place is to conserve and showcase the exceptional art, heritage, traditional aspects and culture of rural India. There are many exhibits consisting of handicrafts, artefacts and paintings which belong to various periods of time ranging from decades to centuries. The works of embroideries of Gujarat and the terracotta sculptures of Rajasthan are attention grabbers.
IGRMS also conducts workshops, competitions and exhibitions related to rural and tribal art. The ambience gives a vintage feel as it is a heritage building. You will be welcomed by some rare and beautiful stone sculptures. The inside of the museum takes you back in time. Do not miss to visit this absolutely beautiful and informative place.
