Gommatagiri is a celebrated Jain centre situated in a tranquil atmosphere just 20 kms. from Mysore. The 700-year-old, 20 ft. statue of Bahubali / Gomateshwara is erected atop a 50 metre tall hillock called ‘Shravana Gudda’. The statue of Gomateshwara is a granite structure and is believed to have been erected during the early Vijayanagara era.
This is a well-known Jain centre that attracts many pilgrims during the annual Maha Masthakabhisekha. The local Jains have a belief that the entire region was a bastion of Jainism at least since the 2nd Century BC. The surroundings are very calm and soothing with very less footfall and houses around.
There are two separate mantapas in the vicinity of the main temple, among which the one is called Jalamandir. There are also plenty of holy samadhis of various Jain monks. There is a dedicated family which lives around this temple who perform regular pooja and abhisheka to the holy deity. Behind the statue of Bahubali, is a wonderful viewpoint which offers a breath-taking view of greenery that surrounds the temple.
