Mysuru is a city of museums. There are plenty of museums in Mysore which take us back in time both scientifically and historically. One among them is Regional Museum of Natural History (RMNH).
Surrounded by Chamundi Hills and Karanji Lake, RMNH is located at Siddhartha Layout, near Milk Dairy. It was established on 20th of May 1995. This is a must-visit place for those who are interested in Zoology. RMNH is an undertaking of the Ministry of Environment and Forests, Government of India. Three such museums are located at New Delhi, Bhopal, Bhubaneshwar and Rajasthan.
It lays its emphasis on the conservation of nature and natural diversity and also depicts the relationship between plants and the animals. There are various Audio – Visual, pictorial, interactive and thematic galleries through which one can explore various aspects of Mother Nature. The museum mainly depicts the floral, faunal and geological wealth of the entire South India & throws light on the importance of conserving nature and natural biodiversity.
RMNH conducts programmes for the masses in order to create environmental awareness. The museum has three important galleries which showcases the Biological Diversity of South India with special emphasis on the Western Ghats, some endangered species of plants and animals, information about the marine habitat of the coastal areas, evolution of man etc. There is a Discovery Room which provides the children to study different specimens and discover information on various habitats.
On the grounds of the museum is a small botanical garden with local trees and a collection of plants used in Ayurvedic medicine. The gardens include an interpretative trail section designed for the visually impaired with not only signs in braille but also a sunken foot bridge to provide a “walk in water” experience of aquatic plants and fishes. Museum curators describe this section as “the first museum garden for the visually impaired in India.”
