India is a land of diversified faith and culture. We see God in nature, animals and every aspect of our environment. Cow is the most worshipped animal to us, Indians. There is an 83 year old organisation in Mysore called The Pinjrapole Society which was started for the sole purpose of protecting Cows from any given kind of violence. It has been 8 decades and the society is still going strong.
Pinjrapole Society came into existence in the year 1938 with the initiative & patronage of Erstwhile King of Mysore HH Sri Jayachamarajendra Wodeyar. He donated 60 acres of land without a second thought near HD Kote road for this noble cause. This Society was formed under the able leadership of Moolchand Jivandas, Bhabutmal, Sri Shampathrajji Khabiya, Shanthilal Chordiya. Since then, this has become a sacred place by providing healthy fodder, clean drinking water, scientific care and hygienic shelter and protection to various abandoned as well as sick animals.
Many rescued, abandoned and sick animals are here. Police rescue animals from being trafficked and they send them here. It must be noted that well known actor of Kannada Film Industry, Darshan has given one of his horses to Pinjrapole. Other animals which are wounded, left by owners have taken shelter under Pinjrapole Society. There are dedicated doctors to look after these animals. Their goal is to support the welfare of animals in need. They are making rehabilitation efforts through community involvement. Their mission is to strive to find new strategies to make their rescue efforts more effective.
Currently, there are about 4,500 animals in Pinjrapole which includes majorly cows, oxen, buffalos and some horses, cats, dogs as well. Rescued animals, abandoned animals, diseased animals, animals left by will by their owners and many such animals are being looked after here. At present, there are 800 life members in this society which includes 20 office bearers. ‘The whole system runs by the monetary contributions received by the donors, philanthropists, Govt. agencies and by selling dairy products produced by the animals staying here’ says Madan Lal Jain, Vice President of the society.
