Heritage City Mysuru is home to many heritage temples and monuments which stand testimony to our glorious history. One among such places is the Venugopalaswamy temple, located near the KRS backwaters. This is one of the most enchanting places to see in Mysore. This temple was constructed in the Hoysala Style of architecture during the 12th century in the village of Kannambadi. It has a fascinating history.
When the KRS dam was built, the old village was submerged along with the temple. Though a new village Hosa Kannambadi was constructed to relocate the villagers by Nalwadi Krishnaraja Wodeyar, the beloved temple was not shifted and lay submerged in the water. In the year 2000, the entire temple resurfaced when water levels in the reservoir dropped. Interestingly, the temple remained intact despite being submerged underwater for 70 long years. Khodays Foundation took the responsibility to recreate the magnificence of this age-old temple. The temple was successfully relocated in 2011 and was rebuilt to its past glory. The new temple majorly comprises old stones from the ancient temple, but polished well to look like a new one. A replica of the stone chariot in Hampi is also displayed here. The idol of Krishna playing the flute as a cow herd is worshipped here as Venugopala Swamy.
With KRS Backwaters as the backdrop, visitors can have a sublime view of sunset from this temple. The exquisite aura and an enthralling ambience of this temple attract tourists as well as architectural enthusiasts throughout the year.
